Pi1 Cygni

That is technically the official name of our cat. Well really it's Azelfafage, the traditional name for Pi1 Cygni, a star found in the constellation Cygnus, which is supposed to represent a swan (but I think it looks more like a sail boat honestly.) The names origin has two possibilities, both Arabic; one which means "the horse track" while the other means "the tail of hen". Which seems to be quite accurate as this star actually consists of two stars orbiting around each other.

Ironically enough, our cat seems to share the same type of behavior. She hates being alone, I guess she probably finds it quite boring, the quite and stillness is quite the contrast to the busy streets of Moscow. That's why I joke about her always orbiting someone or something, whether it be our other cat coming back from his adventures outside, a moth that found it's way in, or me coming home from school. And I think it's her aptitude to grab attention which has let her snuggle right into our family.

Honestly, I doubted that would happen, since we would adopt her(for unrelated reasons), right on the tail coats of our previous, younger cat, dying from a birth defect we had absolutely no idea about. Which might explain why we found her roaming out on the streets, while being a perfectly domesticated cat. However, even though her fur is a solid metallic grey color, the warmth she imbued us with was like a sunny day.

And well I guess with the science-y name she has the curiosity to boot. It's always fun to try and guess what she's exploring. Sometimes she plays with a mouse, still very much alive, which comes courtesy of our older cat, who took quite a fondness to her. Other times she's entranced by the light shimmering on the wall, or how the leaves sway in the wind, the birds on the porch. I guess now that I list this all, it seems like regular cat behavior, but I swear there does exist a difference in how she approaches it. It might be the slight lazy indifference she holds at times, perking her ears up slightly and lazily following it around. Or maybe it's how she stands at the window sill waiting for somebody to come home. Or maybe it really just is a figment of my imagination, but I can tell that the name we picked for our cat was the right one.

  1. I like that the name of your cat fits her personality, though I'm sure it gets hard to explain it to others at times. While the traits that you describe are natural cat behaviors, I think each cat follows them in different ways. I have three cats and they have completely different personalities and habits that still fall into the category of natural cat behaviors

  2. Your cat is iconic to your identity as leo maslov to be honest. Everytime you hop in a call to play something, there must be a segment somewhere you yell "small cat stop it!" or something among that line. I honestly think that your cat is more of a sadist than hating being alone because of how much he wants to mess with you sometimes.

  3. I have a weakness for cat stories, and this isn't an exception. I love this contrast of sentimental fluffiness that is a cat, and the objectivity of science and astronomy. This is one of those personal stories that are great to talk about around a fireplace or a dinner.

  4. This is a nice blog post, especially when you talked about the origins of your cats name. I find this interesting as that is an especially unique name. I find it interesting to imagine a small cat running around and always trying to follow something, kind of like a Disney movie.
